Breaking the Stigma: AANHPI Mental Health

Best fit for health classes, students will learn about the complex cultural, political, and economic factors that affect diverse AANHPI groups and their mental health. Through multiple interactive activities such as discussions, lectures, videos, and projects, students will create a pamphlet on AANHPI mental health for their community, teaching students that their knowledge has the power to positively impact the world!

Lesson Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural perceptions and beliefs around mental health in diverse AANHPI communities.

  2. Demonstrate understanding of how family, social, and political structures create unique struggles for AANHPI individuals.

  3. Identify and understand key statistical facts about AANHPI mental health.

  4. Explain the barriers that exist in accessing appropriate mental health care for AANHPI individuals.

  5. Create innovative solutions to enhance access to culturally-responsive mental health care for the AANHPI community.

Essential Questions:

  1. Who comprises the AANHPI community?

  2. What are the struggles the AANHPI community faces with mental health?

  3. What are the cultural perceptions of mental health in the AANHPI community?

  4. What actions can be taken to address AANHPI mental health struggles?
