Biology, Society, and Policy

Biology, Society, and Policy

This lesson plan is designed as an interdisciplinary exploration of the role of biology in the real world, both throughout history and today. Through guided discussions and small group research, students will discover the intersections between biology, society, and policy and become more aware of how science impacts their everyday life.

In this lesson, students will:

  1. Explore the intersections of biology and biological research with society and public policy, both today and throughout United States history

  2. Practice researching and reading a variety of sources (e.g. videos, scientific studies, opinion articles) and integrating, evaluating, and summarizing this research into a short presentation

  3. Draw connections between biological concepts/the scientific process and historical/current events.

  4. Develop mindfulness about science in everyday life; science is not a closed field—it is intimately connected to the society we live in.

The standards covered in this lesson are: AP Biology 6.B, 6.C, and 6.D, NGSS.HS-ETS1-1 and NGSS.HS-ETS1-3, CCSS.RST.11-12.1, CCSS.RST.11-12.2, CCSS.RST.11-12.7, CCSS.RST.11-12.8, and CCSS.RST.11-12.9, CCSS.RI.11-12.1, and CCSS.RI.11-12.7, and CCSS.MATH.HSS.IC.A.1
