The Brown Asian American Power Movement

In this lesson plan, students will explore the under discussed Brown Asian American Power Movement. Students will learn how the South and South East Asians experience othering by East Asian groups as well as non-Asian groups, as well as the history of how Asian American social justice movements emerged. This lesson plan will also build student’s skills in literary analysis, argumentative writing, and research.

Lesson Objectives:

  1. At the end of this lesson, students should be familiar with all of the countries included under the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and with general details surrounding the Brown Asian American Power Movement.

  2. Students should also be able to identify the reasons for its initial failure through the complex racial factors concerning East Asian and Western peoples.

  3. Students should be able to analyze secondary and primary source documents to understand historical implications.

Essential Questions:

  1. What is the Brown Asian American Power Movement? How does it fit into broader Asian American movements?

  2. What is the relationship between South Asians and other Asian groups in America?

  3. Why are South Asians viewed differently from other Asian groups and non-Asian groups?

The lesson plan focuses on the Common Core standards, Integration of Knowledge and ideas (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH. 9-10.9), Key Ideas and Details (CCSS.ELA LITERACY.RH.11-12.3), and Craft and Structure (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.6)
