The Story of Zero

The Story of Zero

In this lesson plan, students will learn how the concept of zero came to be, in particular thinking about its origins in India. Through games, videos, lectures, and worksheets, students will utilize this knowledge to make conclusions about the importance of honoring diverse mathematicians while putting zero into practice in mathematical operations.

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Understand and explain zero’s value as a number.

  2. Use zero in mathematical operations appropriate to their grade level.

  3. Know the story of zero and the unique contributions especially of Indian mathematicians to advancing the idea of zero as a numerical value.

Essential Questions:

  1. What is zero? How does zero show up in real life?

  2. How does zero work in mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, and how does it work as a placeholder?

  3. Where did the idea of “zero” come from? How did the idea change over time? Why is it important to honor the creators of important mathematical concepts, especially those who are underrepresented?

The lesson plan focuses on the Common Core standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.A.3, CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.CC.C.6, CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.OA.A.1, CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.A.1, CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1 , CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1.A, CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1.B, S.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.D.9
