Introduction
While many have heard or even visited Chinatowns across America, many do not know the long and important history of these areas. First created as safe places for Chinese immigrants during times of xenophobia and violence, these districts have slowly blossomed into something more essential for the Chinese American community. This lesson plan is a love letter to the Manhattan Chinatown, where many go to feel included in a close and resilient community. Students will be able to examine the founding of this influential district of New York City and identify the importance and overall impact of Manhattan's Chinatown.
