Lesson Plan 1: Theme

In this lesson, students will:

  1. Recognize how an author furthers the theme of a novel through its characters.

  2. Understand how an author relates events over the course of the novel to develop a theme.

  3. Analyze the impact of literary devices like foreshadowing and parallelism.

The standards covered in this lesson are: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.3

 

Lesson Plan 2: Analyzing Rhetoric and Diction

In this lesson, students will:

  1. Understand how particular rhetoric can shape the way a country, people, or religion is perceived, and why it is important to consider several perspectives to gain a fuller lens.

  2. Contextualize the political and social warfare in A Thousand Splendid Suns from a “Western” point of view and juxtapose how its events are depicted in those sources versus in the novel.

The standards covered in this lesson are: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.6, RH.11-12.7, RHS.1.A, SET.2.A, NAR.4.A AND .B

 

Lesson Plan 3: Poetry and Literary Elements

In this lesson, students will:

  1. Analyze the meaning of the poem “Kabul” by Saib-e-Tabrizi and identify its literary elements.

  2. Creatively describe your own community (neighborhood, country, school, etc) through poetry or another art form.

The standards covered in this lesson are: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.4, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.3.D
