La Serenata

La Serenata: Cuando Amamos Contamos

Through a short film screening and/or a group reading of an illustrated book, high school students in social studies and other courses will learn about heteronormativity in history and music, reclaim the Mexican tradition of las serenatas and make space to affirm their queer peers.

In this lesson, students will:

  1. Students will investigate heteronormativity in history, cultural traditions and music

  2. Students will learn, make visible and reclaim the Mexican tradition of la serenata

  3. Students will engage with the intersectionality of LGBTQ and Latinx studies

  4. Students will write their own serenata or make a "mixtape" for a loved one

The standards covered in this lesson are: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.2, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.3
