Ethnomathematics: Geometry - Translations

In this lesson plan, students will learn about geometric translations in Maasai blankets and other African textiles. Students will have the opportunity to practice the concept of geometric translations while exploring these beautifully bold and colorful patterns. Before starting this lesson, students should have a background in geometric translations.

In this lesson, students will:

  1. Learn about the history and use of Maasai blankets (Kenya, Tanzania, East Africa), Kente cloths, and other African textiles

  2. Identify and practice horizontal and vertical translations in African textile patterns (CCSS.MATH.HSG.CO.A.5)
